Apps That Manage Your Inbox

Email Apps Save the Day
Creative Commons image source
These days it’s difficult to be ‘out of the office’ as it’s even possible to gain access to work emails from anywhere via hosted exchange services like hosted exchange 2010. Advertisers, clients, co-workers and family can now all reach you, anytime, anywhere, so it’s a small wonder that many people are finding it hard to manage their inboxes.

Founder of TechCrunch, mentioned that the number of emails he receives daily went up from 2,433 in 2008 to 7, 000 by January 2013 and he’s not alone. Managing the vast amount of emails we all receive per day can feel overwhelming. A number of entrepreneurs have spotted the gap in the market and have designed email apps to help people manage their inboxes.

Mailbox (iPhone and Gmail)

The brain child of task-management application Orchestra, this app divides incoming emails into three basic categories: emails to keep, emails to save for later and emails to get rid of immediately. Users can move emails into any of the three categories, simply by swiping their hand across the screen in a specific direction.

Ryan Lawler from TechCrunch believes that the most interesting aspect is the ‘save for later’ function as it allows you to dictate when you’d like to read the email; in three hours, tomorrow, next week. It then removes these emails from the inbox but, still makes it easy to access them later. This both de-clutters your inbox whilst allowing you to pay attention to emails at a later date.

AwayFind (CRM software, Exchange, Gmail and Outlook)

This app allows users to step away from their email inboxes by learning which emails are important and alerting users via text message or phone calls should one come in. It was launched by a former productivity expert, Jared Coralnick. The app costs $4.99 and more per month.

Rapportive (Gmail)

Owned by LinkedIn, Rapportive aims to help users to improve their connections with people in their inbox by tapping into social media like Facebook, Twitter and, of course LinkedIn. Essentially the app shows users what kind of connections they share with the people they’re emailing and promotes connecting with people on social media as well.

Unroll.me (Gmail and Yahoo Mail)

Unroll.me is a free email app that de-clutters your inbox by incorporating, and organizing, all of your email subscriptions into one daily email.

Cue (Mobile and Online)

This mobile app has a number of handy functions that simply inbox management. For example; it automatically connects the events in your calendar to related phone numbers, addresses or people. Cue will pick up on auto generated emails and show users their flight departure times, check in codes etc in a simple, easy to read format.

Possibly one of the app’s coolest features is the fact that it will automatically update a person’s contact details across all your platforms; ensuring that the details you have are always up to date, no matter which platform you’re working from.

There are a plethora of email apps available; picking the right one will come down to a user’s needs, budget and preference.

Why Static Is Your Enemy When Building A Computer

Why Static Is Your Enemy When Building A Computer
License: Creative Commons image source
Have you ever reached out to open a door or even gone to shake another person's hand and been unexpectedly zapped by static electricity? In these instances it can be annoying, slightly embarrassing and a little bit sore, but generally harmless. However, for those thinking about building their own PC, it can be quite dangerous.

While it won't really do any damage to you, it could ruin the interior components to your PC, which it is so important to remove any threat of it before you even think about touching your PC. You may have heard people say that you have to 'ground' yourself before you go to build a PC or touch any of its inner workings. Well, this is true and it can really pay dividends, as the last thing you want to do is to be doing the final tweaks to your PC build only to ruin everything with a static charge!

But exactly why can static be so damaging to computers? Well, it's because you may not even realise that you have transmitted a static charge. You and I only notice it when you experience that familiar jolt of electricity, but this only occurs when it reaches over 3500-4000 volts. Anything below this is not felt, but it can still transfer to your PC and do damage.

For weeks or even months your PC may work perfectly, so you will be happy that your new PC built has gone swimmingly. Then, one day, a programme may freeze or a component may cause strange things to happen with your computer. You could put this down to a faulty part, but in actual fact it is much more likely that it has been caused by a static charge.

So, how can you prevent this from happening? Here are just a few solutions to this issue:

1.) Invest in antistatic products

When working on your PC build you may want to use an antistatic pad that you can lay your PC case or any components on. This will keep everything grounded so there is no risk of static building up, whether it goes above or remains below the threshold. You can find these products online now.

2.) Wear an antistatic wrist strap

Even the best in the business will tell you that antistatic wrist straps can be a real godsend to anyone looking to build their own PC. They can take the worry of static related issues off the table altogether and can make things much easier for you.

3.) Work in a prepared area

You should never work on your PC in an area that is conducive to static, as this will only cause problems. Instead, work on a bare surface with no items that can build up static. A wooden table is ideal for this, and you should ensure that plastic items and metallic products have all been removed from the area. It can also be best to stand up when working on your computer, as chair (especially rolling chairs) can be great conductors for static electricity.

Do you know of any other ways to limit the risk of a static charge when working on your PC?

A New Lease Of Life: Tuning Up An Ailing PC

Posted on 07:35 by Unknown

Watching your PC grind to a halt is a frustrating experience for any technology user. It can feel like the gradual slow-down process begins as soon as you plug your shiny new device in for the first time: a few seconds longer to boot up here, a crashed program there, and before you know it you’re keeping a good book on standby to occupy you during the endless loading screens.

However, PC slowdown isn’t something you need to resign yourself to. There are a number of strategies you can use to help you get your computer back in peak condition, with all of them significantly cheaper than buying a new machine.

Run a Tune-Up Program

Tune-up programs are all-in-one solutions designed to identify and fix common causes of sluggish PC operation. A little like a virus checker, the idea behind the tune-up program is usually that you simply hit “run” and go make a coffee while the software works its magic. Common targets for tune-up programs include your registry (a collection of settings and system files that your computer needs to run, which can become clogged with junk very quickly once you’ve installed and deleted a few programs), and any temporary file folders that should have been emptied but haven’t.

On the whole, tune-up software can provide a quick fix for those who want to get their machine back to something approaching full strength as quickly as possible. However, they are rarely a permanent solution, as the problems they fix can often reoccur. In addition, some tune-up programs are designed to run permanently in the background while you work, and can cause as many speed issues as they resolve.

Clean the Gunk From Your PC

You’d probably be amazed at how dirty the inside of your PC can get, and you might also be surprised what effect this can have on performance. Cleaning your computer requires a degree of technical know-how, and generally requires you to go through the nerve-wracking process of opening your machine’s casing. However, Learning to clean your computer is good practice, and can be a prudent step toward keeping your computer healthy for as long as possible.

The best way to go about cleaning your device is with a can of compressed air. These computer technician mainstays look a little like a deodorant can, squirting compressed air from a small nozzle at the top. This is great for working on the insides of a computer, which can be very sensitive and susceptible to static electricity from your hands. Make sure you don’t use too much on delicate components like fans, however. Once you’re finished with the compressed air, use a cotton swab to gently prise any remaining grime loose.

Use a Computer Repair Service

If tweaking your computer yourself fails, then contracting a computer repair service may well be your best bet. Computer repairs aren’t just limited to major faults: many providers offer tune-up or tweaking services designed to improve the condition of a working but slow PC.

Sending your computer away to be worked on can seem like a big risk, especially if your machine has personal or sensitive data on it. Happily, some companies now offer online computer repairs, whereby technicians can examine and work on your computer using remote access software. As well as being convenient, this means that you don’t risk having your machine damaged in transit, or having guests visit potentially sensitive areas of your workplace.

Social Media: 5 Things You Didn't Know Your Employer Could See

Posted on 00:55 by Unknown

With the Internet and social media, things are starting to change. Today, employers can see a lot more than you want them to. Some of what employers can see depends on your privacy settings, but other things can easily be inferred. Do you know what your boss can see on your social media profiles?

Religious and Political Views

Unless you specifically tell your settings to only allow friends to see your religious and political views, potential employers can see this information. There is controversy around this, due to the legal ramifications it can cause for businesses. If someone is turned down for a job after Facebook is consulted, it could be argued that religious or political views were used as a discriminating factor.

What Groups You are In

Take a look at the groups you are a part of in your social media pages. Your employer may not appreciate if you are a part of a group called "I hate my job… screw this place!" Whether you are looking for a new job or trying to keep the one you currently have, make sure you are only in workplace-friendly groups if you are concerned about your employer checking on your social media profiles.

Who Your Friends Are

Who Your Friends Are

Are you friends with someone with a 'reputation'? Whether they are famous or simply are known for something they have done, someone with a well-known name on your friends list may not be a big deal to you, but it may be to an employer. If so, keep in mind that the boss can pull up this information. They can see who your friends are, and that can be good or bad for you. This doesn't mean you have to change your friends, just be aware of any potential problems that may arise.

Pictures You Post Publicly

Most people forget to make their pictures or albums private. Because of this, most images online are available for anyone to see. This includes social media accounts. When you post pictures of doing dangerous or illegal things, drinking and partying, or any other pictures you simply wouldn't want your boss to see, remember that they can see these pictures unless you specifically set them up to be private.

Are You a Family Person?

Look at your profile picture. This is public to everyone, no matter how private the rest of your profile is. If you have a picture of your kids, an employer is going to know that you have a family. If you have been working for the company for ten years, they probably know this. However, if you are job hunting, potential employers may not. And realistically, you may not want them to. Consider your profile picture, and make sure it is something you are comfortable with employers seeing and making judgments about.

Make sure that your online presence is what you want it to be. With Reputation.com YouTube videos, you can understand the steps you can take to clean up your profile and show the world what you want them to see.

Could Computers Ever Replace Schools?

Posted on 10:10 by Unknown

Most children studying in western schools will use a computer at some point in their education. In fact, online education is now actually part of the curriculum with a class dedicated to learning computer skills – IT.

More and more schools are dropping the chalk and picking up the mouse to integrate online with learning, but could computers ever really replace institutionalised schooling?

Most universities have some kind of portal that acts as a hub. Which usually includes taught materials, relevant information and timetables – these hubs could almost eliminate the need to go to the class at all.

If each student had a computer in class, it could save universities a lot of money that they would normally spend on huge lecture halls and projector screens – but would each student learning through a computer really make for Interactive education and could this filter through the chain down to primary education?

Long Distance:

Online learning allows for long-distance learning, meaning that location would no longer be an issue for people that live in remote areas.

Free Education:

The first thing most people do when they want to find something out is Google it. The amount of information on the internet is absolutely staggering and there is actually a growing trend of teachers and academics breaking away from traditional methods of teaching and uploading educational and engaging videos online. With themes ranging from algebra to aeronautical engineering, millions of people are tuning in to learn online. If this trend continues, there would be no limit to the amount of people being taught at one time and new students could access the videos whenever they like as the videos would remain online.

What’s stopping it?

All of this sounds great, so what is it that hasn’t allowed for this to happen already?

Well, of course, a computer could never really replace the benefits of physically being taught by a teacher and interacting with other children in class.

A lot of a child’s experience of discipline comes from being taught at school. Learning that you have to listen, learning that you must let others talk, patiently waiting for your turn to talk and hearing other people’s ideas all comes when being taught in class.

This allows a child to develop a lot of their characteristics, traits and life skills that they may not achieve by being taught by a computer and a mouse all day.
